Skipping the Forsaken Campaign in Destiny 2: A Ghost from the Past
Destiny 2 holds a vast universe. It has thrilling battles and rich lore. Yet, like all evolving worlds, some content fades away. This includes favorite campaigns, like Forsaken. Let’s discuss if you can still experience Forsaken or if it’s best to skip it.
The Vanishing Act of Forsaken: Gone But Not Forgotten?
First, can you play the Forsaken campaign now? Sadly, no. It is unavailable in Destiny 2. On February 22, 2022, Bungie decided to tuck the Forsaken campaign and the Tangled Shore into the Destiny Content Vault (DCV). Yes, just like that. It vanished without a trace.
To clarify: “The Forsaken campaign and Tangled Shore were placed into the Destiny Content Vault on February 22, 2022 and are no longer available.” It’s like getting a legendary engram but only finding blues inside. Disheartening, I know.
Why Vault Content? The Case of the Missing Missions
Why would Bungie take such drastic action? The answer lies in game development aspects. Destiny 2 is a grand title. Its cumulative content can create what developers call “technical debt.” Just imagine your Guardian’s vault overflowing with items – it creates chaos and slows gameplay.
Bungie sought to remedy this with the Destiny Content Vault. They removed various significant pieces beginning with the Beyond Light expansion in 2020. The goal was to manage performance and reduce technical issues. They tucked away campaigns, destinations, and activities.
Their official stance was that vaulting content would also create room for new expansions. Features like The Witch Queen’s expansion and its destination are examples. They aimed to bring fresh content to light, necessitating the removal of older pieces like Forsaken.
Forsaken’s Ghostly Remnants: What Remains?
The campaign is gone, buried in the DCV like an exiled Guardian. But not all Forsaken content disappeared. Before its vaulting, Bungie made Forsaken free for all players until February 22, 2022. There was a brief opportunity to hunt for Cayde-6’s killer without paying. If you missed this? Welcome to the club of regret.
But remnants exist via the Destiny 2: Forsaken Pack. You can still buy this pack, unlocking many Forsaken-era items. These include over 20 Exotic weapons, the tough Shattered Throne dungeon, and the epic Last Wish raid – complete with Riven of a Thousand Voices. Though the story missions are gone, this pack provides significant endgame content.
Free Adventures: Campaigns Without a Price Tag
Bungie opened new opportunities while Forsaken lies dormant. As of late 2024, the base game, plus Shadowkeep and Beyond Light campaigns, are free to play. This means zero cost. You won’t need Glimmer or Silver. This includes Stasis powers from Beyond Light.
To clarify: The Shadowkeep and Beyond Light campaigns are free for all players, even those who didn’t purchase expansions. Effective June 4, 2024, both campaigns became completely accessible. This is a fantastic chance for newcomers to engage with more of Destiny 2’s lore without cost.
However, that while campaigns are free, raids, dungeons, and certain Nightfalls still require purchasing respective packs. You can’t skip Forsaken since it’s not available, but you can explore Shadowkeep and Beyond Light without spending anything.
Skipping Ahead: The New Light Experience
Now let’s explore skipping campaigns in another light. Destiny 2 allows a by for the initial “New Light” campaign. However, this “campaign skip” means you won’t automatically complete everything or get rewards.
The New Light campaign skip is not a free . After completing the tutorial mission, you can by the remainder of the New Light content and go straight to the Tower. This is mainly for fast access to social areas and endgame activities, not for trivializing the campaign experience.
So while Forsaken is irretrievable, the campaign skip isn’t what you might expect. You have opportunities to jump into Shadowkeep and Beyond Light freely, plus fast-track past New Light’s intro. Destiny 2 is always changing; new content arrives while some old bits fade away. Even if Forsaken lingers as a memory, numerous adventures await in the expansive universe.
